General Stanley McChrystal had made a breakthrough by "speaking truth to power", making the communication between the White House and the US military in Afghanistan somewhat an interactive one.
However, if the number of troops are not increased, boys sent to fight in Afghan will continue to be sent home in body bags.
Faced with such dilemma, what can Obama do to balance the scale?
While the war drags on, it takes a toll on US's resources. Afghan no doubt will suffer their own heavy share of war casualities, many of them innocent civilians. Does it weigh heavy on Obama, the countless souls that will be lost if the war drags on? Even though he was not the one who declared war.

In all, decisions made in the White House communicates pretty much through a Linear Model to the US citizens and the whole world.
General Stanley McChrystal had made a breakthrough by "speaking truth to power", making the communication between the White House and the US military in Afghanistan somewhat an interactive one.
We know that problem will arise when people communicate to us differently. General McChrystal did not delibrately make his speech tactful. It was direct to the point. In this case, the world media is highly focused on the type of move President Obama will make.
President Obama is still in his early terms of presidency and the weight of the world lies on his shoulders. He may be eager to prove himself, but war is always a delicate issue to tackle. By sending more troops to Afghan, many more lives would be sacrificed. It would also contradict his promises to the Americans.
However, if the number of troops are not increased, boys sent to fight in Afghan will continue to be sent home in body bags.

Even though UB SIM follows the US style... I think its just different from what you can really experience in US itself.
US has been a world super-power and the Big Brother of the world...Nations look up to them and ask for advices.. Which is cool actually.
=P
President Obama has a very tough decision to make as seen here; sacrifices of people is inevitable no matter what decision is made. I think the only way is to weigh the pros and cons and seeing which decision made will be less risky yet able to end the war with minimum people being killed.

ReplyDeleteIndeed! War is always bad. No matter what the outcome is, the civilians loses.
Humans are constantly in conflict. This is an inevitable part of life and it is also the way the world is balanced. So yeah. No point commenting on Obama's decision. It's all meant to be.
ReplyDeleteI think war is wrong and pointless no matter what. Yes, you might say that you are fighting for what is right, but in the process of fighting, you might already be doing what is wrong to many. It is like telling people you are "fighting for peace". While fighting for your so-called peace, you are actually creating chaos and ruining peace and even harming innocent people. Also, you are wasting resources that might not be recovered even if you win the war, like in the case of human resources, you would not be able to bring back the dead.

War drains resources (natural and economical) and causes the loss of human lives.
We all see what we want to see, dont we. ):
War is a tough thing to decide on. Let alone, debate on. It should always be a last resort as it has to take into account how the countries involved will be affected politically, economically and so forth. War has a lasting and lingering effect.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there would be criticism no matter what choice President Obama made in the end. There really isn't an ideal solution here, probably just one that does the least damage to what we deemed most important.

ReplyDeleteon first pass i was partial towards pulling out. afghanistan is way too messed up as it is and yes the drain on the resources especially in this financial climate is incredible.
However, thinking a little more I think they need one good push to finish the job in afghanistan. the security implications are very real. and solving the afghan problem will aid them largely in preventing future terrorist attacks from afghan. and the effects of that will continue long after the financial situation takes a better turn (which i belief the market will eventually sort itself out)

ReplyDeleteThere will definitely be long term implications on the economy like you said. But will it really take a better turn for Afghan, we wouldnt know right? A war torn country trying to get back up on its feet... Breaking away from Taliban's rule...How much money would they need to rebuilt the infrastructure and get a healthcare system in place?
AND not all terrorist come from Afghan! Stereotype!
Some of the boys sent out to the field may actually be happy there because they get to see some 'action' and perhaps become a hero.
